This is a Permanent, Full Time vacancy that will close in {x} days at {xx:xx} BST.

The V&A is a family of museums dedicated to the power of creativity. Our mission is to champion design and creativity in all its forms, advance cultural knowledge, and inspire makers, creators and innovators everywhere.

The Archives section of the V&A is responsible for the management of the Museum’s institutional records and the archive collections - principally the Theatre and Performance Archives and the Archive of Art and Design, together with the archive collections of Young V&A. Occupying over 8km of shelving, the collections encompass archives of over 1000 individuals and organisations relating to art, design, performance and the history of the museum. This is an exciting time to join the team, following the merger in 2021 of the integrated Archives Section and the National Art Library under the V&A Research Institute. The new department is responsible for research programmes, and for facilitating and enhancing access to the V&A’s archival and library research resources.

We are seeking to appoint an Archives Assistant. This permanent post will support the Archive of Art and Design, Theatre and Performance Archives, and Young V&A Archives and will initially be based at V&A South Kensington, moving to V&A East Storehouse. V&A East Storehouse is a unique new museum experience that opens up the V&A collection to everyone. Opening in east London, 2025.

The role will enable the postholder to develop skills in several aspects of archival practice and collections care, including cataloguing and rehousing archives, as well as supporting the place of archives in knowledge development and research at the V&A. Successful candidates will have practical and organisational skills, experience of working with the public and an interest in working with archives. As well as good IT and communication skills, we will be seeking experience of working with archives and data systems, ideally in a museum setting.

The V&A is the world’s leading museum of art and design, housing a permanent collection of over 2.8 million objects, books and archives that span over 5,000 years of human creativity. The museum holds many of the UK's national collections and houses some of the greatest resources for the study of architecture, furniture, fashion, textiles, photography, sculpture, painting, jewellery, glass, ceramics, book arts, Asian art and design, theatre and performance.

Our mission is to be recognised as the world's leading museum of art, design and performance, and to enrich people's lives by promoting research, knowledge and enjoyment of the designed world to the widest possible audience. We strive to make the V&A matter to more people and in that context we work to the following six strategic objectives:

  • To create a world class visitor and learning experience across all V&A sites and collections.
  • Focus and deepen the relevance of our collections to the UK creative and knowledge economy.
  • Expand the V&A's international reach, reputation and impact.
  • To operate with financial and organisational initiative and efficiency.
  • Showcase the best of digital design and deliver an outstanding digital experience.
  • Diversify and increase private and commercial funding sources.
