About the V&A PhD Placement Scheme

The V&A has created a range of PhD placements based in collections departments, archives, the National Art Library, research, and collections care and access to support the professional development of PhD researchers across the UK and internationally. In addition to on-the-job experience and mentoring from supervisors, PhD placement students will have access to the Museum’s wider range of workshops, talks and postgraduate training opportunities, alongside a training package designed for the PhD placement cohort. Depending on the project, placements may combine onsite and remote work, with the exact working pattern agreed between the student and placement supervisors.

Eligibility: V&A doctoral placements are unpaid and only open to students currently studying on a funded PhD programme. International applicants welcome. All successful applicants will be required to attend an induction day on 30 September 2026.

About the Role

This PhD placement, based at V&A South Kensington, will contribute to research and improved cataloguing of holdings of Scottish design objects across the V&A collection, supporting the re-development of the Scottish Design Galleries at V&A Dundee, due to re-open in 2028. As V&A Dundee does not have its own collection, many of the objects displayed in the galleries are on loan from the V&A collection.

The PhD placement researcher will work with the Senior Curator of Metalwork 1900–Now and the V&A Dundee Scottish Design Galleries team to support research into discrete areas of Scottish design through independent research and review of acquisition records, correspondence, and archival materials. The placement will contribute to improved object catalogue records and object files, enhanced representation of Scottish design history at V&A South Kensington and Dundee, and the re-development of a bold new Scottish Design Gallery. There may be an opportunity to visit V&A Dundee and work with the wider curatorial team in Scotland during the placement.
