The Role

About the V&A PhD Placement Scheme

The V&A has created a range of PhD placements based in collections departments, archives, the National Art Library, research, and collections care and access to support the professional development of PhD researchers across the UK and internationally. In addition to on-the-job experience and mentoring from supervisors, PhD placement students will have access to the Museum’s wider range of workshops, talks and postgraduate training opportunities, alongside a training package designed for the PhD placement cohort. Depending on the project, placements may combine onsite and remote work, with the exact working pattern agreed between the student and placement supervisors.

Eligibility: V&A doctoral placements are unpaid and only open to students currently studying on a funded PhD programme. International applicants are welcome to apply. All successful applicants will be required to attend an induction day on 30 September 2026.

About the role

In 1853, the South Kensington Museum, now the V&A, purchased over 600 ceramic objects formerly in the collection of the Foreign Office Secretary and Superintendent of the Slave Trade Department, James Bandinel (1783–1849). As part of its formative collecting years, Bandinel’s collection was acquired as a representative collection of European ceramics, including Italian Renaissance maiolica, Dutch tin-glazed earthenware, and English porcelain.

Using accession registers and the museum archive, the PhD placement researcher will establish the scope of the Bandinel collection, which has not been fully itemised, and undertake research into Bandinel’s collecting habits using external resources. The researcher will enhance catalogue records on the V&A’s Collection Management System (CMS), helping to identify objects connected to Bandinel whose provenance is not currently reflected in cataloguing. The placement researcher will also contribute to internal and external research seminars, supporting the V&A’s ongoing work to explore its institutional history in relation to colonial histories and legacies.
