About the V&A PhD Placement Scheme

The V&A has created a range of PhD placements based in collections departments, archives, the National Art Library, research, and collections care and access to support the professional development of PhD researchers across the UK and internationally. In addition to on-the-job experience and mentoring from supervisors, PhD placement students will have access to the Museum’s wider range of workshops, talks and postgraduate training opportunities, alongside a training package designed for the PhD placement cohort. Depending on the project, placements may combine onsite and remote work, with the exact working pattern agreed between the student and placement supervisors.

Eligibility: V&A doctoral placements are unpaid and only open to students currently studying on a funded PhD programme. International applicants welcome. All successful applicants will be required to attend an induction day on 30 September 2026.

About the role

This PhD placement will investigate the National Art Library’s (NAL) acquisition of German books during the Nazi era (1933–1945), building on previous research to explore the circumstances of these acquisitions during a period marked by the theft, dispossession, and sale of books from persecuted communities. The placement will assess whether ethical considerations were taken into account and scope the feasibility of contributing records to the Looted Cultural Artefacts Database (LCAD), a web-based portal supporting provenance and restitution research.

Using acquisition records and provenance research, the placement researcher will investigate whether the V&A had a defined strategy for acquiring German books or if purchases were made opportunistically, including a focus on books by artists labelled Entartete Kunst (Degenerate Art) in Nazi Germany. The placement will contribute to institutional transparency, historical accountability, and future provenance research at the V&A, while providing experience of the ethical and legal frameworks in which museums operate.
